About GW4x4R

Gloucestershire & Worcestershire 4×4 Response (GW4x4R) – a member of the 4x4 Response UK network – was established in 2006 by a small group of members from a responsible four-wheel-drive association that recognised the need for a team of local volunteers that, using specialised vehicles with trained drivers, was able to respond to incidents in the region.

Its first major incident was the flooding of 2007. Gloucestershire 4×4 Response (as it was known then) worked with the British Red Cross and other 4×4 Response teams to deliver bottled water, hygiene packs and food to care homes across the county.

In the winter of 2008, the team responded to freak weather conditions on Crickley Hill and was on-hand to check on drivers and passengers of cars stranded in the traffic and snow.

The following winter of 2009 saw GW4x4R sign an agreement with Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) and Gloucestershire Primary Care Trust to provide assistance to healthcare workers that become stranded in adverse weather conditions and need assistance getting to work or back home.

GW4x4R now boasts approximately 60 response drivers and four controllers across the Gloucestershire and Worcestershire region.

How We Help

Organisational Assistance
In this age of financial restriction, many organisations simply can’t afford to maintain a sufficient fleet of four-wheel-drive vehicles for deployment during periods of severe weather or emergency. GW4x4R offers the services of its BORDA-trained drivers – and the use of their own well-equipped vehicles – in these circumstances.

Organisations we have agreements with include:

  • NHS Trusts
  • Regional Ambulance Services
  • County Councils
  • Town Councils
  • Care Homes & Hospices
  • Other Voluntary Services & Organisations

Event Marshalling
GW4x4R also provides marshals for numerous events, including festivals, country shows, rallies and off-road events; and have a number of MSA-registered marshals within the group.

We can provide mobile marshals or event stewards (both on & off road) during the summer season. Our vehicles are equipped with a group comms system and hand-held radios to co-ordinate tasking. We also provide our own hi-viz clothing.

Events we have assisted include

  • Cotswold Show
  • DB Max Triathlon Series
  • VoTwo Triathlon Series
  • Rogue Racer XC Mountain Bike trials
  • South Cerney Steam Extravaganza
  • Withington Horse Trials
  • Cirencester Park Fun Ride
  • Mayhill Massacre
  • Newent Onion Festival
  • Swindon Big Arts Festival
  • Isle of Wight Festival
